THE ART OF MAURICE SENDAK, WITH 261 ILLUSTRATIONS AND AN ORIGINAL POP-UP, INSCRIBED BY SENDAK WITH A SKETCH OF A WILD THING

LANES, Selma G. The Art of Maurice Sendak. New York: Harry N. Abrams, (1980). Oblong quarto, original pictorial cloth, original printed acetate dust jacket. $3200.

First edition of the first major retrospective of the acclaimed artist-author’s career, with 261 illustrations, including 94 color plates and an original Sendak pop-up, inscribed by him: “For Joan. For Everything. Maurice Sendak April '81” with a superb original sketch of one of his Wild Things (Moishe) saying, “Thank you!"

Covering his best known works (such as Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen) as well as his youth in Brooklyn and his early work as an illustrator (for example, his advertisements for Jell-O), this lavishly illustrated chronicle of Sendak's career also includes three folding plates, a tipped-in facsimile of Where the Wild Horses Are (the first dummy for Wild Things) and an original pop-up illustration depicting a scene from "Little Red Riding Hood." Hanrahan A107.
