THE BASIS FOR “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE”: FIRST BOOK EDITION OF PHILIP VAN DOREN STERN’S THE GREATEST GIFT

STERN, Philip Van Doren. The Greatest Gift. A Christmas Tale. Philadelphia: David McKay, (1944). Small, slim octavo, original pictorial blue paper boards, original dust jacket.

First book edition of this touching Christmas story, the basis for Frank Capra’s beloved movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Van Doren Stern, who had been working on this story since the late 1930s, sent it to to publishers in 1943. However, he was turned down by all of them. Undaunted, he opted to have 200 copies of the story made into a booklet and gave them to friends as Christmas presents that December. Eventually, the booklet came to the attention of RKO producer David Hempstead, who showed it to Cary Grant. Grant was interested in playing the lead role and RKO opted to purchased the rights for $10,000. RKO sold the rights to Capra at cost and it was he who developed it into “It’s a Wonderful Life,” charmed by the simplicity and power of the story. It became one of the most famous Christmas films of all time after its release in 1946 with Jimmy Stewart in the starring role. This first book edition, with new illustrations by Rafaello Busoni, appeared in December 1944, after the film rights had been purchased, perhaps in anticipation of the Cary Grant movie. Stern also sold the story to Reader’s Scope and Good Housekeeping (though under a different name and by external appearances in the January issue) for periodical publication the same month.

A fine copy.
