TRUMAN, Harry S. Memoirs: Year of Decisions. WITH: Memoirs: Years of Trial and Hope. Garden City: Doubleday, 1955-56. Two volumes. Octavo, original black cloth, cartographic endpapers, original dust jackets.
Special Kansas City first editions, signed on the half title in Volume I by President Truman.
"Truman's Memoirs are an invaluable record of the former president's tumultuous years in office, his early days in Missouri, and his rise in local and state politics. There are delightful glimpses of his family life, striking appraisals and anecdotes of world leaders such as Churchill, Stalin, Chiang and De Gaulle, and candid disclosures about the background of national and international events. But overshadowing all is the story of the glorious task of bringing a war to an end, of working for an enduring peace and leading the free world into a new age" (Doubleday). Precedes the first trade edition; issued the same year as a limited number of specially bound presentation copies. Volume I is one of 20,165 copies; Volume II is one of 11,500. Without scarce slipcase. Laid in are the postcard invitation to President Truman's autographing party for the book launch at the Hotel Muehlebach on November 2, 1955, the typed program for the Muehlebach party, and the prospectus for Churchill's History of the English-Speaking Peoples, issued by bookseller Frank Glenn from his Muehlebach location. Volume I inscribed on the half title "To Lynn Moore Ewing / From Harry S. Truman"; Ewing's mark on front free endpaper.
Volume II with offsetting to rear endpapers, very good dust jackets with minor toning and small edge chips. Near-fine condition.
