"INTO THE DARK, INTO THAT SILENCE THAT HAS NO END": THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 1901, SIGNED AND DATED BY H.G. WELLS

WELLS, H.G. The First Men in the Moon. London: George Newnes, 1901. Octavo, original blue cloth gilt, black endpapers; housed in a custom chemise and slipcase.

First English edition, first state of "the last of Wells’ classic scientific romances," signed and dated by him on the half title, " H.G. Wells. Monday May 12 1902."

Wells' forays into the genre he dubbed "scientific romance" "became the archetypal examples of a distinctive United Kingdom tradition of futuristic and speculative fiction" (Clute & Nicholls, 1313), and have had "an incalculable influence on modern literature and popular culture; their cosmic sweep and haunting pessimism have influenced most subsequent science fiction" (Stringer, 708). This inventive examination of a dystopian lunar society marks "the last of Wells' classic scientific romances, which carefully bridges the gap between his scientifically inspired contes philosophiques and his comic studies of late Victorian social life" (Anatomy of Wonder II-1225). It is thus "a turning point in Wells' literary and ideological evolution" (Pagetti, Science Fiction Studies, July 1980). This first English edition was published just one month after the first American edition; this is the rare and desirable first state, with blue cloth stamped in gold and black endpapers. Illustrated with 12 black-and-white plates by Claude Shepperson. Without exceptionally scarce original dust jacket. Currey, 518. Hammond B7. Cutler & Stiles, 154. Small printed number (possibly a shelf location) tipped to top corner of the front pastedown.

Plates and text fine, cloth with one tiny split to head of spine, gilt bright. A nearly fine copy.
