"THE VALLEY FLOOR WAS BLACK WITH BUFFALO, SOLID AS GRASS"
WILLIAMS, John. Butcher's Crossing. New York: Macmillan, 1960. Octavo, original red and gray cloth, original dust jacket. $1900.
First edition of Williams' scarce second novel.
Williams' novel vividly depicts the harsh frontier life of a buffalo hunter in 1870s Kansas. Williams wrote this novel while Director of the Creative Writing program at the University of Denver; he would go on to write Stoner (1965) and the National Book Award-winning Augustus (1972).
Book fine, with usual toning to interior. Price-clipped dust jacket exceptionally good, with only slightest rubbing to extremities and faint soiling including circular sticker removal mark. A near-fine copy.
