Between the Acts

"HER FINAL STATEMENT ON ART AS THE TRANSFORMING PRINCIPLE"

WOOLF, Virginia. Between the Acts. London: Hogarth, 1941. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $1200.

First edition of Virginia Woolf's final novel, published shortly after her suicide, in original dust jacket.

During the writing of Between the Acts, Woolf had, uncharacteristically, "no checks, doubts, despairs, struggles or revisions" (Bell, 460). Considered "her final statement on art as the transforming and unifying principle of life," Woolf envisaged it as "a rambling capricious but somehow unified whole" (Drabble 97). "Leonard Woolf decided after Virginia's death to publish Between the Acts exactly as she had written it, editing only for spelling and minor textual errors… The critical success and popularity of the book give evidence that Virginia had found her way into a new fusion of form and vision after The Years" (Willis, 358). With dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell. Kirkpatrick A26. Small bookseller ticket.

Book fine, dust jacket bright and nearly fine with minor creasing and wear to extremities. An exceptional copy.
