ILLUSTRATED FIRST EDITION OF STORIES FROM XENOPHON, 1911, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

(XENOPHON) HAVELL, Herbert Lord, translator. Stories from Xenophon. London: George G. Harrap, 1911. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, black and red morocco onlays, marbled boards and endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition of Havell’s painstakingly edited translation of Xenophon’s most important works, with 16 plates depicting scenes from Ancient Greek history, handsomely bound in three-quarter onlaid morocco-gilt.

Athenian-born historian and philosopher Xenophon was a pupil of Socrates before serving with Cyrus the Younger on his “famous expedition to Persia” which resulted in “Xenophon’s masterpiece, the Anabasis.” Covering 401-399, this narrative describes Cyrus’ attempt to take the throne from Artaxerxes and the Greek army’s eventual return, in which “Xenophon played a part in leading the defeated remnant back to Greece” (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Written circa 375, this eyewitness history, which “has immortalized Xenophon’s name… is the first work which made the Greeks acquainted with some portions of the Persian Empire” (Peck, 1673). This book draws from Xenophon’s works including the Hellenics, the Anabasis, and the Memorabilia, and is supplemented by other contemporary Greek histories such as those by Thucydides and Plato. Booklabel of renowned bibliophile Abel E. Berland, whose famous library included over 500 literary treasures. When interviewed by Nicholas Basbanes for his book, A Gentle Madness, Berland said of his prized collection: “The most important thing I can say to you about these books is that I never take them for granted… It is my privilege to visit with them every day, and to be in their company.”

A beautiful copy, with distinguished provenance.
