Original photograph of President Eisenhower with famous cartoonist Al Capp, inscribed: “For Al Capp, Regards, Dwight D. Eisenhower.”

The picture shows Eisenhower and Capp (creator of the "L'il Abner" comic strip) with Marvin Kline, former Mayor of Minneapolis, and a "poster boy" for the Sister Kenny Foundation, located in Minneapolis. The Sister Kenny Foundation pioneered new treatments for Polio in this country in the 1940s; Kline was its president; Al Capp, in his capacity as honorary chairman of the foundation, provided it with artwork and made numerous public appearances on its behalf. In 1954, Eisenhower designated Capp chairman of the Cartoonists' Committee in the People-to-People program, which promoted savings bonds. In 1956, Eisenhower approached Capp, asking him to head a group of cartoonists tasked with creating pro-American propaganda to make America's "peaceful goals and… our respect for the rights of others" known around the world.
