"I WAS ONE OF THE TEN BEST TENNIS PLAYERS IN THE WORLD": FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY ARTHUR ASHE

ASHE, Arthur [with] AMDUR, Neil. Off the Court. New York: New American Library, (1981). Octavo, original half cream-colored cloth, original dust jacket. $550.

First edition, signed on the front flyleaf: "Peace, Arthur Ashe."

Tennis champion Arthur Ashe, who made history as the first black man to win Wimbledon and the United States and Australian Opens, also dedicated much of his life "to dismantling the barriers of poverty, privilege, racism and social stereotyping" (New York Times); parts of this autobiography focus on his years-long battle with the apartheid-era South African government and his efforts to support the segregated country's Black athletes. Illustrated with 16 pages of black-and-white photographs.

Book very nearly fine, lower corners slightly bumped, in an extremely good dust jacket with minor rubbing to extremities.
