"ALL OVER THE WORLD PEOPLE SHOW SIGNS OF BEGINNING TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES": FIRST EDITION OF THOUGHT CONTROL IN U.S.A., ONE OF ONLY 250 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES FOR PARTICIPANTS AND SUPPORTERS

(PROGRESSIVE CITIZENS OF AMERICA) (SALEMSON, Harold J., editor). Thought Control in U.S.A.: Complete Proceedings of the Conference on Thought Control, Hollywood ASP-PCA. (Hollywood, CA: Hollywood A.S.P. Council, 1947). Large octavo, original black cloth. $800.

Limited first edition of the collected proceedings and talks delivered at the 1947 Conference on Thought Control organized in response to the HUAC Hollywood subpoenas and increasing use of loyalty oaths, number 97 of only 250 copies, this copy "specially printed for Johnny Green," Academy Award-winning composer and songwriter, best known for his 1930 hit "Body and Soul."

These are the proceedings and speeches delivered at a conference called by the Progressive Citizens of America in response to the House Un-American Activities Committee issuing subpoenas throughout Hollywood. "The conclusions of the reports were of overwhelming unanimity that there is an alarming trend to control the cultural life of the American people in accordance with reactionary conceptions of our national interest. We felt it our obligation to record this evidence in printed form and to make it available to all those who regard freedom of thought as our primary right as Americans and as human beings" (Introduction). Participants included Donald Ogden Stewart, Albert Maltz, George Sklar, Dorothy Hughes, and many other progressives in the Hollywood community. Simultaneously issued as a series of six staple-bound pamphlets.
