Greenleaf taught law at Harvard starting in 1833, eventually becoming Dane professor of law in 1846 after the death of Joseph Story (to whom the Treatise is dedicated). The Treatise was first published in 1844-46 and immediately became the undisputed authority in its field, going through countless editions over the next century. "Until the appearance of Professor Greenleaf's Treatise upon Evidence, the Bar in the United States were wholly dependent upon English works for the information in this department of the law" (Marvin, 347).
